Pencils Through  A Bag Experiment

- A sealable plastic bag - Water - Food coloring (optional) - 5 pencils - Large tray

Materials Needed:

Fill a sealable plastic bag with water (We colored ours green.)  and seal the bag.  Then poke a pencil through both sides of the bag.

Step 1

Keep poking more pencils through the bag.  Notice no liquid leaks out!

Step 2

Once all the pencils have been added, place a tray below the bag and start removing the pencils. Notice now the water leaks out.

Step 3

No water leaks out because the bag is made of a polymer.  Polymers are made of long chains of flexible molecules.  When the pencil is poked through the bag, the flexible molecules move to allow the pencil to pass through and form a seal around the pencil.
