MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE A RAINBOW SENSORY BAG (affiliate links):
- Gallon freezer sealable bag
- Permanent markers in all the rainbow colors
- Anti-bacterial hand gel
- Transparent color counters
- Clear packing tape
HOW TO MAKE A RAINBOW SENSORY BAG:
- Start by drawing a rainbow on the sealable bag using permanent markers.
- Then take the counters and create the rainbow on top of the drawing so you know exactly how many counters of each color are needed. Put these counters aside.
- Next add about a cup of hand gel to the plastic bag and add the counters you set aside.
- Seal the bag and apply pieces of tape along the top and bottom of the bag to secure it to a surface (preferably a white surface).
- Now recreate the rainbow by moving the counters inside the bag to match the lines drawn on the bag!
WHY IS SENSORY PLAY IMPORTANT FOR DEVELOPMENT?
Sensory play is any kind of play that engages the senses – sight, touch, taste, smell and sound. From the time a child is born they are using their senses to examine and learn about the world around them. Engaging the senses in an activity allows the brain to make stronger connections and therefore assists in children learning more complex concepts. Sensory play can also be a great calming mechanism when kids are nervous or anxious.
