This fun patriotic red, white and blue drink for kids is so simple to make, perfect for patriotic holidays like July 4th, and also a great science experiment to demonstrate liquid density.

What to Do
- Start by pouring Sprite, Blue Gatorade & Hawaiian Punch into 3 of the small glasses. You can use other beverages but they should have various sugar contents about 10 grams apart. Sprite has 38g of sugar, Blue Gatorade has 21 g of sugar and Hawaiian Punch has 11g of sugar.
- Add ice to the remaining glass.
- Use the dropper to add Sprite (or the liquid with the highest sugar count) to the glass until it is 1/3 full.
- Next use the dropper to add blue Gatorade to the glass with ice until it is 2/3 full. Be sure to drip the Gatorade over the ice. This helps it to keep from mixing with the Sprite as it’s added.
- Finally use the dropper to add Hawaiian Punch to the glass with ice until the glass is full. Again, be sure to add the Hawaii Punch by dripping it on the ice to help keep it from mixing.
- That’s it! Now take a look at your drink and you will see the colors stay separated and you have a patriotic red, white & blue drink!
- Give your drink a taste test! Can you taste each layer? Use a straw or chopstick to mix the layers if you’re want!
Why it Happens
The liquids stay separate because they have different densities. The more sugar there is in a liquid, the denser (and heavier) the liquid is. By adding the densest liquid first and then layering on less dense liquids, they stayed separate in the glass and created a cool, three-colored drink! So fun!
