Melted Crayon Art for ages 6+

We love the idea of making melted crayon art, but it always seemed too daunting and messy to undertake as a project. Well, that all changed for us when Crayola sent us their Crayola Crayon Melter to test out! It makes creating art with melted crayons sooooo easy and the results are simply stunning!

MATERIALS NEEDED TO MAKE THIS MELTED CRAYON ART PROJECT:

This is what you’ll need to do this activity.  All product links are affiliate links.  So when you shop through them, Raising Dragons will receive a portion of the sale at no extra cost to you.

  • Crayola Crayon Melter
  • Crayola crayons (the melted comes with some, but you will want more for refills). Also, be sure only to use Crayola crayons as we found when we tried a different brand they didn’t melt properly.
  • Canvas (We used 11×14 but any size would work and smaller ones would make for a quicker turnaround time.)
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape

HOW TO MAKE MELTED CRAYON ART:

  1. Start by plugging in your Crayola Crayon Melter and allowing it to heat up.
  2. To make a heart print like ours, cut a heart shape out of construction paper. Any shape would work here like a circle, triangle or even something more complex like a unicorn.Melted Crayon Art with the Crayola Crayon Melter
  3. Tape the heart to the middle of the canvas. This will allow the area under the heart to remain white which really creates a dramatic effect when the rest of the canvas is filled with color.
  4. Peel all the paper off of your crayons and break them each into small pieces (about 4 pieces per crayon). This allows the color to change more quickly on the canvas. When we first started we were using whole crayons but found it took too long to move between colors. Melted Crayon Art with the Crayola Crayon Melter
  5. Load the crayon pieces into your Crayola Crayon Melter in the order you want them to come out the bottom. We did the rainbow colors in order of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple.
  6. Wait about a minute or so and then take the Crayon Melter and test it on a scrap price of paper. If the color is right, start applying it to the canvas.Melted Crayon Art with the Crayola Crayon Melter
  7. We applied coloring in short back and forth motions about 1 inch long moving out from the heart and then back towards the heart. Melted Crayon Art with the Crayola Crayon Melter
  8. If the Melter stops working properly, rave a tissue or paper towel handy to wipe the end off. Then make sure it has enough crayon pieces inside and test it to see if it’s working again.
  9. Keep playing color to the canvas until you’ve filled in all the white space.
  10. Finally, remove the heart slowly and carefully from the center being sure not to pull off any melted crayon that may be stuck to it.

OTHER ACTIVITIES TO DO WITH THE CRAYOLA CRAYON MELTER:

The Crayola Crayon Melter can be used in so many ways! Here are a few other things we’ve done with it!

1. Draw letters and shapes on waxed paper. Wait a few seconds and once they dry they can be picked up to make 3-d letters and shapes!

2. Take a regular coloring book and use the Crayon Melter to draw over the lines in the book and make beautiful textural drawings!

3. Practice writing your name or sight words or math facts using the Crayola Crayon Melter! It makes all these important educational activities much more fun!
