Let your kids play with some geometric art! It’s a very educational toy, and they won’t even know they are learning.
Geometric Art – What It Is
What is geometric art? You might have heard about buying geometric art sets or letting your kids play with these pieces.
At its most basic level, geometric art is any kind of design that puts shapes together to create a larger picture.
You’ll find geometric art paintings and tutorials for making your own art.
Geometric Art is Educational
Teaching geometry to children can be tough. The key is to let them explore the world around them and point out the names of shapes that they see. Like, “see the stop sign? It has 8 sides! What shape is that? An octagon.”
Free play is also very important. Yes, sitting down and teaching them shape names and explaining angles will help them learn, but so will just letting them pick up the shapes and fit them together with other shapes.
What Playing With Shapes Teaches
Playing with shapes teaches so many mathematical concepts. Here are some of the main things they will learn just by playing with geometric blocks.
- Angles – they will learn how shapes all meet at angles and why some won’t fit together.
- Spacial Relationships – What kind of shapes fit together without any gaps?
- Following directions – If you create specific pieces of art, you will have to follow the directions.
- Fine motor skills – Picking up the small blocks and putting them together increases fine motor skills
- Shape names – Teach the names of the shapes as you put them together.
