Fizzy Fun Vinegar and Baking Soda Experiment * ages 3+

Experiments with vinegar and baking soda are always a hit in our house and this fizzy fun activity did not disappoint!  It was so fun that each one of my sons wanted their own turn, so we spent most of the afternoon repeating it!!

MATERIALS NEEDED:

• Plastic egg carton
• Baking soda
• Food Coloring
• Vinegar
• Dropper or squeeze bottle

WHAT TO DO:

1. First add drops of food coloring to the egg carton. Use lots of different colors to get results like ours.
2. Then cover the food coloring by sprinkling a generous amount of baking soda over the top. Now the fun can begin.
3. Let the kids start adding vinegar and watch the colors appear through all the fizzing.
4. My kids liked to add more food coloring to mix the colors and when you add more vinegar the mixture fizzes all over again!

WHY IT HAPPENS:

Vinegar and baking soda cause and acid-base reaction when mixed.  Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When they are mixed together they create a gas called carbon dioxide. For a more detailed explanation of the science behind this reaction check out this article from USCB Science Line.
