MATERIALS NEEDED:
- Plastic egg carton
- Baking soda
- Food Coloring
- Vinegar
- Dropper or squeeze bottle
WHAT TO DO:
- First add drops of food coloring to the egg carton. Use lots of different colors to get results like ours.
- Then cover the food coloring by sprinkling a generous amount of baking soda over the top. Now the fun can begin.
- Let the kids start adding vinegar and watch the colors appear through all the fizzing.
- My kids liked to add more food coloring to mix the colors and when you add more vinegar the mixture fizzes all over again!
WHY IT HAPPENS:
Vinegar and baking soda cause and acid-base reaction when mixed. Baking soda is a base and vinegar is an acid. When they are mixed together they create a gas called carbon dioxide. For a more detailed explanation of the science behind this reaction check out this article from USCB Science Line.
